The 2009-2010 academic year marks Pitt Academy's 60th anniversary of educating children with learning and processing disorders.
Initially named The Monsignor Pitt Learning Center, in honor of its founder, Monsignor Felix Pitt, the school was created to fulfill his devotion to the education and training for children with special needs. The first class, located at St. Patrick School on West Market Street in Louisville, was known as the Opportunity Class. Monsignor Pitt implemented many innovative teaching ideas, providing opportunities for students to succeed. The children received remedial instructions in reading, writing and math.
The techniques for educating this population of children have changed over the years, but the mission of the school remains true to Monsignor's original belief in the importance of providing opportunities for special needs children to succeed.
